Many of our students come to school not "ready to learn". Statistically, one in five students (21.4%) may struggle with a mental illness. (Educational Leadership "Who in Your Class Needs Help?" December 2017/January 2018) Students are coming to school with issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. Teachers were not taught how to identify or address these mental behavioral challenges, which often are rooted in trauma.
In a recent ASCD Educational Leadership article, the “Professional Development Gap” of teachers and school leaders on mental health issues was highlighted. A solution is to offer better training for teachers and school leaders to help them understand how behaviors are connected to trauma and mental health, and how it impacts the learning of students. This workshop will be an opportunity to learn basic information about trauma and mental/behavioral health issues affecting our students and offer some strategies to use in the school setting. The presenters have over 50 years combined experience in the school setting with mental health issues. Cindy Johnson is a licensed professional clinical counselor with a specialty in trauma therapy. Amy Riccio is a licensed social worker in the Fargo Public Schools working with dropout prevention.
