Program Designed to Recognize and Support Public School Teachers Who Find Innovative Ways to Apply Technology in the Classroom to Improve Student Achievement
(January 17, 2008, MINNEAPOLIS, MN) – The Qwest Foundation announced that it will award $100,000 to Minnesota public school teachers this spring through its Teachers & Technology grant program.
The Qwest Teachers and Technology grants will be awarded to teachers through a competitive process administered by the Minnesota Business Partnership (MBP) Education Foundation. A blue ribbon panel will consider grant requests of up to $7,500, with special consideration given to proposals that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. “We want to encourage and reward educators who are using technology to engage students in learning, particularly in science, technology, engineering and math,” said John Stanoch, Minnesota president of Qwest. “We had so many great proposals in 2007; we’re excited to review this year’s proposals.”
“Qwest’s Teacher and Technology grants highlight their commitment to working with Minnesota educators to improve STEM education and prepare our students for the opportunities of the 21st century,” said Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren. “I want to thank Qwest for their generosity and encourage educators to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Grant applications are available at www.mnbp.com and must be submitted no later than February 20, 2008. All grants will be presented by the end of the 2007-08 school year. To be eligible, an educator must be employed by a public school located in an area served by Qwest Communications. However, the school need not be a Qwest customer.
In 2007, Qwest presented nearly $60,000 in mini-grant awards to 10 Minnesota schools that are integrating cutting-edge technology in a variety of subject areas.
