Minnesota Principals Speak Out on School Reform: 5/27/2010 11:55 AMJoint statement on
school reform from the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association and
Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals
(May 27, 2010 – St.
Paul, MN) -- As associations
of elementary and secondary principals we have the privilege of working with over 1700 school leaders. It is our experience that these professionals bring to
their schools and communities a commitment to providing the highest quality
education for all students.
Minnesotans expect effective schools and we are delivering
quality education as noted in our TIMMS, ACT, NAEP, and Advanced Placement scores,
as well as International Baccalaureate enrollments and numerous other measures.
These outstanding accomplishments do not occur without great principals.
We believe in effective schools and great principals. School
reform efforts are occurring throughout the state, led by principals who know
there is more work to do in closing the achievement gap. In addition our vision
is to prepare all students for post secondary and career success. Principals
continue to lead toward meeting this vision and reality even in times of
declining resources.
The School Improvement Grant (SIG) is a flawed federal mandate that takes away local
control and decision-making. Local school boards by Minnesota statute maintain
authority over school principals and teachers. Onerous federal mandates should
not pre-empt solid local control.
