POSITION: 
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AT EMERSON SPANISH IMMERSION, MPLS

FUNCTION: 
To provide educational leadership for Emerson Spanish Immersion including the staff supervision, curriculum development, and community partnerships necessary to promote the educational development of each student.

ABOUT MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOLS:

The Minneapolis Public Schools is a culturally diverse community of learners.  Our strategic mission is to improve student achievement, leadership and trust.  All students are expected to learn, with each student and family valued equitably and respected.  Two-way communication between staff and families is both valued and expected.  Principals provide administrative leadership to schools, working with students, staff, parents and community to establish a safe, positive, learner-centered environment for all students.  Teachers provide instructional leadership, set high standards for academic achievement and foster a learning climate based on mutual respect and support.  Students, as well, are expected to be responsible for their learning and to ask for help and guidance when needed.  Through active participation by all stakeholders we believe our students and the Minneapolis Public Schools’ community can grow, flourish and develop.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must hold a valid Principal’s license for K-8 student level in the State of Minnesota.  If not currently licensed in Minnesota, documentation verifying a license in Elementary and/or Secondary Administration in another state, along with transcripts, must be submitted to Human Resources.
  • Must have a minimum of one year as a Principal or Assistant Principal in the area for which application is being made.  The State of Minnesota requires a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience to qualify for a Principal’s license.
  • Must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Must have had successful experience, within the last five years, working with families and community representatives in the Hispanic community.
  • Must have had successful experience, within the last five years, working with a diverse student population and in collaborating with school personnel.
  • Must have provided effective leadership including: establishing a vision, goals, purpose, cultures and value to promote learning; demonstrating good judgment and high ethical standards.
  • Must have demonstrated support for site-based management and ability to establish and maintain a participatory management system with shared decision making including staff, parents, and community. 
  • Must have motivational skills to inspire staff, facilitate teamwork, support innovation and serve as a role model.
  • Must have demonstrated commitment to high academic standards for all students through:   effective oral and written communication skills that can lead to change at the site;     effective and efficient use of a variety of process skills for planning, implementation, and problem solving;  leading and supporting school staff as they collect, analyze and evaluate data, as well as design and implement curriculum and effective instructional methods;  articulation and promotion of collaborations among and between elementary, middle and senior high schools; and  the development of close and positive working relationships with students, parents, and communities of all socioeconomic status and ethnic backgrounds to create a culture that supports positive learning, sustains achievement and promotes trust and collaboration.
  • Experience with and knowledge of  effective instructional strategies for meeting the needs of English Language Learners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the state and federal legal and regulatory issues pertaining to education that require compliance; understanding of public policy’s relationship to education.     Experience and/or knowledge regarding managing elementary or secondary budget and resource allocations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an effective student guidance and development system.
  • Ability and commitment to create a school environment that addresses diversity of needs and allows for the inclusion of students with special needs.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive school climate and learning environment in which positive, appropriate behavior is encouraged and discipline problems are minimized.
  • Additional Consideration will be given to candidates who have:
  • successful special education experience
  • demonstrated success as an instructional leader (i.e., star mentor/demonstrate high expectations for effective instruction by encouraging continuous improvement, state-of-the-art instruction methods, and multiple approaches; empower teachers to make instruction decisions; model effective instruction and monitor the effectiveness of instruction efforts made by others
  • successful internship/AP placement 
  • demonstrated success in developing a budget using a collaborative process while keeping many varied stakeholders engaged and informed
  • evidence of reflective practice
  • minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience or its equivalent in  an urban environment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, organize, guide, evaluate and direct the implementation of all school activities including, but not limited to, building administration, instruction, communication, and staffing:
  • Instruction:  Make recommendations concerning the school’s programs of instruction; budget school time and resources to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction in order to increase student achievement; lead in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program by understanding the individual needs of students in the program; assess the programs designed to meet those needs; work collaboratively with all staff to strengthen the instructional program; maintain high standards of student conduct through a guidance and development program which focuses on prevention, communication with parents and high expectations of conduct; enforce discipline fairly, incorporating building standards from district policy, with sensitivity for diversity issues; hold high expectations for all students and link expectations to instruction; keep abreast and take leadership in successful methods used in other areas that would work with Minneapolis students; include staff, students and parents in the development of instruction.
  • Building Administration: Make recommendations concerning the school’s administration; prepare and submit the school’s budgetary requests; encourage collaborative grant writing and development of other support programs with community agencies and families; monitor expenditures of all funds; supervise the maintenance of all required building records and reports; prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration; supervise the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes; provide for adequate inventories of property and for the security and accountability for the property.
  • Communication:  Maintain communication with the district to keep the Superintendents informed of the school’s operation; establish effective communication and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents and community; assume responsibility for all official correspondence and news releases; act as liaison between the school and the community; interpret State, Federal and District activities and policies, encouraging active, hands-on participation in school life; be aware of and have sensitivity to and support issues of diversity.  Have working knowledge and skills in handling public and media relations.
  • Personnel/Staffing: Participate in the recruitment, selection and supervision of all school building personnel; monitor compliance with District policies and standards; evaluate performance and counsel all staff members regarding their individual and group performance; act affirmatively in hiring and promotion to meet the goals and objectives of the plan approved by the Board of Education; facilitate the professional development of all staff through collaborative staff development planning and implementation; delegate and hold others accountable for results; participate actively in all school-related activities and programs; lead the school in developing and implementing a school improvement plan; guide staff in professional development that will enhance their teaching skills to meet the needs of a culturally diverse student population with a variety of learning styles.
  • Miscellaneous:  Perform other duties as determined by role, function, and supervisor.

SALARY:  Principal’s salary schedule  
       Elementary (2005-2007 contract:  $93,507-105,191)
