In his principalship, Rutten’s
educational philosophy is guided by the words: “If you think education is
expensive, try ignorance.” (Attributed to Andy
McIntyre and Derek Bok)
Rutten lists the most significant
accomplishments of his career as:
--Writing and co-writing successful grants for
Wadena-Deer Creek Schools including: a $250,000 award for Enhancing Education
through Technology in 2009-2011 to install interactive whiteboards in
classrooms and provide staff development.
--A $50,000 award from Unspent Title V (Innovate
programs/Technology funding) in 2009 to install interactive whiteboards in
classrooms. --An award of over $900,000 for Reading First (2003-2006
Round 1) which provided over 300 hours of staff development on effective
literacy instruction.
Rutten has served in MESPA
leadership, holding the position of Western Division Secretary (2002-2004).
MESPA members selected 12
of their peers to receive the 2010 MESPA Division Leadership Achievement Award;
Rutten was nominated by his Western division colleagues.
