Join us for an incredible day of networking and professional development for elementary and middle level administrators new to the principalship.

New principals: You are NOT alone! Our one-day program offers practical advice from experienced principals who understand the flow of your work. This comprehensive seminar builds professional capacity and provides you with a solid orientation to the resources and assistance available from MESPA and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Plus you earn continuing education credits!

Network with others new to the profession and presenters who are practitioners in the field! Seminar topics are designed to support you in your role as an elementary or middle level principal and MESPA member. Some of the topics covered include:

  • School law for new principals with Roger Aronson, MESPA legal and legislative counsel (highly regarded school law expert; practiced in school law since 1981; co-chairs the Minnesota State Bar Association School Law Conference; on the executive committee of BELL - education lobbyist group; Special Projects Counsel for the MN State High School League; represents MN Association of Secondary School Principals).
  • How to Survive Your First Year: Your Questions, Answered with a panel of experienced MN principals.
  • Finding Failure: Iteration and Innovation in the Principalship from Minnesota's 2016 National Distinguished Principal, Brad Gustafson (@GustafsonBrad).
  • Get the Most out of MESPA- our responsive, grassroots association with MESPA Executive Director Jon Millerhagen and MESPA President Mark French (@PrincipalFrench).
What do previous participants think?
"I really appreciated the advice from seasoned administrators. They were open, honest, and knew the most pertinent information that we, as new administrators, would most likely need to hear."
- New Principal, 15-16 cohort

"It was good to hear how supportive other principals are for us to network with as things come up. It was reassuring to know that we are not on our own."
- New Principal, 15-16 cohort

The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) invites you to join a national panel of new principals. Currently this initiative taps the experiences of more than 1,100 new principals who share feedback and learn from their peers by taking part in 4-6 brief online surveys throughout the year. We encourage you to participate and check out the results and resources from this year's panel at newprincipal.org.
