Kids -- we won the bikes, lost the bikes, won the bikes!
Horace Mann "Sainted" in the Pioneer Press
"Last month (April 2013), I attended the Family Fitness Fun event at Frost Lake
Elementary School with a Karen family from Burma whom I have
befriended. Wouldn't you know? We were at the far end of the school when
we faintly heard a last call for the winning ticket for the bike raffle
that evening. Our ticket matched! We had one minute to race to the
office, but we got caught up in the crowd assembled at the door. We
reached the desk mere seconds after they announced the substitute
winning ticket number. Another happy family came forward and was justly
awarded the prize: four brand-new kids' bikes.
Seeing the awkward situation and four very disappointed kids, the
bike donor immediately stepped in and said, "I have a solution." This
kind-hearted man, Mr. Gary Havir from Horace Mann Insurance in
Maplewood, offered to purchase and donate four additional bicycles for
the family who had just missed their chance. His original donation to
the event had already been generous, but to double it was remarkable!
The Htoo family and I will never forget his act of kindness and charity.
Thank you, Mr. Havir! You are a saint.

The ranking is based on findings by GMI Rankings, a company that provides global research on the different risk factors affecting the performance of public companies. Forbes reports GMI looked at over 60 different governance and forensic accounting measures to rank the companies. It found the top 100 Trustworthy Companies have consistently demonstrated transparent and conservative accounting practices and solid corporate governance and management. “This award illustrates the spirit in which we run this company – to do the right thing, not only for shareholders, but also for our agents, employees, and importantly, our policyholders,” said Pete Heckman, President and CEO of Horace Mann. Also, the Horace Mann Board of Directors has hired Marita Zuraitis as President and Chief Executive Officer-Elect. Marita will be starting her employment at Horace Mann on May 13.
