Robert F. Arnold, MESPA Executive Director from 1971-1991
Robert F. Arnold, MESPA’s first executive director, passed away October 11, 2009 at the age of 80.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends across Minnesota and the nation.

Bob was the director of the association from 1971 until he retired July 31, 1991.

He summarized the accomplishments of the association during those years in his last “Executive Director’s Message” in the spring of 1991: “We have established professional standards, we have secured stability in employment security and bargaining rights, and we have participated in the public policy debate which impacts our schools.  Certainly there is concern about the future of public education in Minnesota, but there is also great hope...and we are certain that our work will have positive effects for untold years.”

Those positive effects of the work actualized by Bob and the leaders of MESPA during those “early” years laid a solid foundation for MESPA, allowing the association to become the strong grassroots organization that it is today.

Bob started his career in education as an elementary teacher in Bloomington. He was a Minnesota Teacher of the Year, active in the Minnesota Education Association (now Education Minnesota), and served as its president before becoming the executive director of MESPA.

According to Kay Douglass, MESPA President 1985-87, “Bob Arnold was a force to be reckoned with in promoting the interests of children and elementary principals in the Legislature during his years as MESPA executive director. I know from talking with other executive directors and principals at national conventions that they held Bob in high esteem and looked to MESPA as a model for guidance with their own associations.”

His funeral is Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Shell Lake, rural Osage, Minnesota. A visitation is planned for Wednesday, October 14, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Details are on the funeral home Web site: http://www.westkjos.com.
