OCTOBER 17, 2011:
Build the network of peers and resources you need to succeed!
Attend the MESPA New Principal Seminar: Surviving and Thriving in the Principalship: a networking and professional development opportunity for elementary and middle level administrators new to the principalship: first and second-year principals, assistant principals, interns, and experienced principals who have recently moved and joined the Minnesota education system.
Our one-day program offers practical advice from people who understand the flow of your work. This comprehensive seminar builds professional capacity, and provides you with a solid orientation to the resources and assistance available from MESPA and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). And you earn continuing education credits.
And you will receive copies of two valuable books.
“Working with Difficult and Resistant Staff” (by John and Sheila Eller, published by Solution Tree) provides busy practitioners with practical strategies to counteract negative behaviors immediately. Armed with new insights into the motivations and methods of oppositional staff, readers will be able to proactively build consensus and monitor staff conditions to maximize the success of new initiatives.
“Leading Learning Communities: Standards for What Principals Should Know and Be Able To Do” (published by the National Association of Elementary School Principals) presents the voices of elementary and middle level principals who state their belief that everything a principal does in school must be focused on ensuring the learning of adults and students. This guide takes a fresh look at the role of school leader. Influenced by the academic standards movement -- which is demanding that we focus on equity and instruction as never before -- schools are thinking anew about how to define "quality" in schools and how to create and manage the environments that support it.
Network statewide with others new to the profession and presenters who are practitioners in the field. Seminar topics are designed to support you in your role as an elementary or middle level principal and MESPA member:
- Benefits of membership in MESPA -- our responsive, grassroots association with MESPA Executive Director P. Fred Storti.
- School law for new principals with Roger Aronson, MESPA legal and legislative counsel (highly regarded school law expert; practiced in school law since 1981; co-chairs the Minnesota State Bar Association School Law Conference; on the executive

Teams raced to find resources on the MESPA Web. | committee of BELL -- education lobbyist group; Special Projects Counsel for the Minnesota State High School League; represents Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals).
- Dealing with Difficult and Resistant Staff with Sheila A. Eller (elementary principal in Mounds View Public Schools; renowned author, consultant, and trainer; works with educators to develop energized staff meetings, school-improvement initiatives, team-teaching strategies, and employee supervision) and John F. Eller, PhD (executive coach and conflict coach for mid-level executives, school principals, and superintendents; consults nationally -- clients include school districts, educational service centers, intermediate education districts, national educational organizations, nonprofit organizations, federal government agencies, corporations, small businesses, and other agencies looking to improve the effectiveness of their leaders and employees).
- Optional New Principal Mentorship Program led by Minnesota National Distinguished Principals Jim Hoogheem and Byron Schwab. Get feedback on the mentorship experience from last year new principals Sam Frederickson and Sam Richardson. See the attached Mentor Program fact sheet for full details.
- Reflections from the 2011 Minnesota National Distinguished Principal, Joan Franks.
- Ask the Experts: advice from practitioners in the field, a panel of experienced Minnesota principals: Tim Bell (Prior Lake-Savage), Joan Franks (Minneapolis), Dr. Fatima Lawson (St. Paul), Joe Rossow (Minneapolis), and Kris Stueve (Cambridge-Isanti).
OPTIONAL DAY TWO: Learn to guide staff toward a continuous improvement cycle -- attend an
optional second day of the New Principals' seminar: the Three-Minute Walkthrough seminar on Tuesday,
October 18, 2011 at Andersen Elementary School, Bayport, MN. The seminar day includes continental breakfast,
lunch, handouts, and administrator clock-hour credits (CEUs).
A three-minute walkthrough is a brief, focused
classroom visit. Learn to use this tool to guide your teachers and set your
school on a continuous improvement cycle. Kathy
Larson, national professional growth and development consultant, will lead
you on the walkthrough, using the school as a live laboratory, allowing seminar
participants to observe and use the process in its classrooms.
The combined cost for the Surviving and Thriving in the Principalship (Day 1) and the Three-Minute Walkthrough (Day 2) for a
MESPA member is $195.

 | Mentorship Program sponsored by | From a program participant: "At first I
was hesitant, but I am glad that I did participate. Some people have a negative
impression of mentorship as a corrective process, but this program is tailored
to meet the principal’s needs and creates new networks for support."
|
 | New Principal Mentorship Program | Program coordinators (l-r) Byron Schwab and Jim Hoogheem urge new principals to take advantage of the
experience of Minnesota National Distinguished Principals -- as they work with
you one-on-one throughout the school year! To take part in the New Principal
Mentorship Program, attend the New Principal Seminar or contact the MESPA office at 651-999-7310.
The mentorship program is separate from the New Principal seminar. You
need not take part in the mentorship program to attend the seminar, and vice versa. The
mentorship is optional and will take place over the course of the school year.
All participants receive 15 administrative continuing education units (CEUs). For a MESPA New Principal Mentor Program fact sheet with complete
details, scroll down.
