Working through the legislative process to support education.

  • What is happening in the Minnesota Legislature and Congress in terms of education?
  • How will legislation affect children's learning?
  • How will legislation affect the principalship?
  • What is the role of MESPA members in effecting the best possible legislative outcome for education?

Hold a Legislative Forum at your school
Get to know your legislators! Do they know the education needs of the schools they represent? Do you know how they stand on education issues? Plan a Legislative Forum at your school with the legislators who have been elected and represent your school community.

ADVOCACY BROUGHT TO YOU BY EPAC
Content for the Legislative Advocacy Center provided by the MESPA Legislative Resolutions Committee, and sponsored by EPAC (the Elementary Principals Action Committee). As the political action arm of MESPA, EPAC promotes MESPA members' political advocacy as one of your ongoing professional responsibilities.

Who represents me?
And how do you contact them? Visit the District Finder (link below). Type in your address, city, state, zip code — and the names of your state senator and representative, U.S. Senators, and Congressional representative will appear, with active links to each legislator’s Web page and contact information.

How to write your legislator a letter.
For legislator contact information along with correct forms of address, and a brief list of dos and don'ts when writing letters, visit the MN State Legislature website.

Have an advocacy plan
and stick to it! Create a concrete plan of what you want to accomplish this year.  Your plan might include:
  • Getting at least one local, state, and federal legislator in to visit your school during the school year.
  • Capturing stories about how government policies both harm and help your ability to serve students.
  • Creating an up-to-date outreach list of active and concerned parents, community members, and others willing to assist with advocacy efforts.
  • Connecting with any new legislators after the November elections and maintaining relationships with incumbents.

MN Budget Bites Blog
Are you worried about what is happening at the State Capitol? Are you interested in knowing what President Obama and Congress are up to? Do you love to follow interesting and timely blogs that focus on issues, not gossip? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions...then you'll want to start following the Minnesota Budget Bites blog. The staff of the Minnesota Budget Project (an initiative of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits) has been blogging for nearly a year on a whole range of issues that are relevant to nonprofit leaders, policymakers, public policy advocates, members of the media and anyone else who is concerned about where Minnesota is headed in these troubling economic times.
