Base Camp is an urban camp and event center offering a new type of classroom. Base Camp engages students in a variety of learning opportunities allowing them to explore beyond the typical school walls of their education. As stated in their brochure: “The brain child of Northern Star Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Base Camp will connect youth to interactive and inspiring activities conveniently located between the ‘twin’ cities.” It’s mission is to connect young people to interactive experiences that build healthy, contributing citizens of character and leaders for life.  

PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS

Base Camp programs are designed to inspire interactive learning through a variety of educational experiences. Primary emphasis is placed on outdoor/ environmental learning, building leadership and team building skills, and citizenship development.

Base Camp is conveniently located in the heart of the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area. Base Camp has a variety of engaging features to

inspire all ages of youth from schools, youth groups, & community organizations. Educators can select from seven curriculum strands to meet their student's needs, featuring many activities which include:

  • Space Shuttle Simulator (Team Building)
  • Indoor Climbing Rock Wall (Team Building)
  • High Ropes Course (Team Building)
  • Archery Range
  • Camping Resource Library
  • Amphitheater
  • Hiking (Fort Snelling Historic Trail)
  • Biking (Ride along the River)
  • Underground Railroad Simulation
CURRICULUM

Teachers can connect classroom learning to a new kind of experiential education. Base Camp staff will assist teachers in meeting their classroom objectives.

Tied to Minnesota State Educational Standards are 7 age-specific (grades 3-4, 5-6, & 7-8) curriculum strands:

  • Team Building (e.g. Bully prevention)
  • Environmental Science
  • History
  • Aviation
  • Physical Fitness (e.g. Cycling)
  • Outdoor Skills
  • Leadership & Character

About the Base Camp Site
  • 35,000 square foot building on a six acre site at Historic Fort Snelling.
  • Built in 1907 as a cavalry drill hall.
  • Near Ft. Snelling State Park, light rail station, Minnehaha Falls Park, MSP airport, Mall of America, and more.
  • Easy access to historic hiking trails, biking, parks and rivers.
