Under MN rule 3512.1200 all licensed school administrators must
accumulate 125 pre-approved continuing education credits (CEUs) prior
to being granted a Minnesota licensure renewal. "Clock hours"
means hours of actual instruction in pre-approved Minnesota
administrative and supervisory continuing education programs. With the
exception of relevant coursework completed at accredited colleges and
universities, the Minnesota Board of School Administrators must
pre-approve all administrative continuing education activities.
(One-quarter college credit equals 15 clock hours and 1 semester
college credit equals 20 clock hours.) Renewal requirements must be met
during the five-year period of each continuing license. All
continuing education programs and the clock hours which may be earned
in each program must be approved by MBSA before participants are
registered in a continuing education program. Approval will not be
granted after the program has been offered. A program will be
approved if it meets the requirements of the rules and if MBSA
determines that the program is adequate to fulfill the purposes of
continuing education requirements. MBSA will provide the sponsoring
organization a pre-approved continuing education certificate for the
program. The sponsoring organization is responsible for giving the
participants a copy of the form at the program when it is offered. When
applying for relicensure, the certificates should not be forwarded to
MBSA. Each school administrator is responsible for collecting the
certificates he/she accumulated during the 5-year period prior to
licensure renewal. Upon the renewal request the certificates should be
forwarded, along with the renewal application, to the Minnesota
Department of Education Educator Licensing and Teacher Quality Services
for processing. If you have questions regarding the
pre-approval of an administrative continuing education activity, you
may contact the Board directly by calling 651-582-8754.
