Data also suggests that adults tend to greatly underestimate the intensity and frequency with which bullying occurs. Whether it takes the form of physical confrontation, gossiping, teasing, or excluding others, bullying is a critical issue that affects the school climate and the learning environment of every classroom in which it occurs. It is critical that teachers have the tools and skills to address the problem in an appropriate and effective manner.
"Stand Up on the Schoolyard" is a bullying prevention workshop developed by Wavelength's senior ensemble member, Julie Ganey. Julie has worked for over 18 years presenting in schools to teachers and students with Wavelength. She serves as the Outreach Director at Next Theatre, where she leads community members in the creation of civic-based theatre projects that explore challenging issues, and has run bullying prevention programs for teachers and students in schools throughout Chicago.
The Bullying Prevention workshop*:
- Seeks to provide educators with strategies to empower victims, witnesses, and those doing the bullying to stand up for themselves and others.
- Provides educators with tools and exercises that can be used in the classroom to foster empathy, tolerance and honest conversation about bullying issues.
- Provides a framework for identifying the different types of bullying, and tools that can promote courage and self-confidence in students.
* Also available in a format for students.
