Please join us for the MESPA New Principals' Seminar: Surviving and Thriving in the Principalship, a networking and professional development opportunity for elementary and middle level administrators new to the principalship.
Our one-day program offers practical advice from people who understand the flow of your work. This comprehensive seminar builds professional capacity, and provides you with a solid orientation to the resources and assistance available from MESPA and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). And you earn continuing education credits.
Network statewide with others new to the profession and presenters who are practitioners in the field. Seminar topics are designed to support you in your role as an elementary or middle level principal and MESPA member:
- Benefits of membership in MESPA -- our responsive, grassroots association with MESPA Executive Director P. Fred Storti and MESPA President Kristine Stueve.
- School law for new principals with Roger Aronson, MESPA
legal and legislative counsel (highly regarded school law expert;
practiced in school law since 1981; co-chairs the Minnesota State Bar
Association School Law Conference; on the executive committee of BELL --
education lobbyist group; Special Projects Counsel for the Minnesota
State High School League; represents Minnesota Association of Secondary
School Principals).
- Energizing Staff Meetings with Sheila A. Eller (elementary
principal in Mounds View Public Schools; renowned author, consultant,
and trainer; works with educators to develop energized staff meetings,
school-improvement initiatives, team-teaching strategies, and employee
supervision).

- Bullying Prevention, the Olweus Program: Curt Carpenter (Minnetonka) and Michelle Krell (Kasson-Mantorville).
- Reflections from the 2012 Minnesota National Distinguished Principal, Jon Millerhagen (Bloomington).
- Ask the Experts: advice from practitioners in the field, a panel of experienced Minnesota principals: Curt Carpenter, Sheila Eller, Michelle Krell, Jon Millerhagen, Allie Storti, and Kris Stueve.
PLUS, participants receive copies of two valuable books.
“Energizing Staff Meetings” (by Sheila Eller and John Eller, published by Corwin Press). By modeling best practice at staff meetings, leaders give their teachers new engagement tools that they can put directly to use in their classrooms. The authors demonstrate how to reduce the "chore" factor of meetings by:
- Lightening the atmosphere with creative approaches
- Starting with purpose-focused theme music and other energizers
- Building relationships within the team that transform the school culture
- Overcoming barriers to productivity

- It was great to connect with other principals and to learn about all the valuable resources MESPA has to offer.
