In this cognitive engagement model, teachers ask their students questions that prompt higher-level thinking about passages that they have read. Teachers also model the use of cognitive processes and ensure that students are actively learning at all times.
The cognitive engagement model has helped some students who are reading below grade level to make more than a year's growth in a single school year.
