Make a Difference in New Teacher Retention and Performance
The Minnesota Board of Teaching has awarded the Alexandria School District a grant to provide free mentor training to other Minnesota districts. Alexandria’s training model has been built upon research based programs and resources.

Participants can select individual sessions, but attendance in the complete series provides for optimum growth and development as a mentor or mentor leader.
MENTOR TRAINING SERIES
Foundations of Mentoring (Offered twice) Foundations of Mentoring, developed at the New Teacher Center in Santa Cruz, focuses on the knowledge and skills that are critical for those who work with beginning teachers. We will cover the development and attitudinal phases of new teachers, mentor roles and strategies and how to tailor support to meet the individual needs of new teachers. This is an important introductory training for new mentors or mentor leaders. Tuesday, August 18, 2009 9:00 am - 3:00 pm OR Thursday, September 24, 2009 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Creating an Effective Teacher Mentorship Program Districts will receive program planning support in designing a comprehensive teacher induction program. Action planning will revolve around the key components identified in research necessary in any highly effective mentorship program. Teams are encouraged to attend as participants will work collaboratively to develop a plan that meets the needs of their home district. Friday, September 25, 2009 9:00 am -3:00 pm
Peer Coaching and Observation Training (Offered twice) This training will introduce participants to coaching skills and non-evaluative observation strategies to use with new teachers. Through the use of coaching and observation techniques covered in this session we can help teachers improve their performance by enhancing their problem solving and reflection skills. Mentoring in the 21st Century Mentors are teacher leaders and have the potential for making a huge impact on the future of education. This session will focus on adult learning styles, understanding the generations, moving from consultant to collaborator to coach, maintaining data driven discussions, and problem solving typical new teacher challenges. Each participating district will receive a copy of "Mentoring in the 21st Century" by Paula Rutherford. Tuesday, December 8, 2009 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Train the Trainer Facilitation Skills This session is for anyone who facilitates training for new teachers or mentors. Participants will actively participate in various presentation and training tools. We will also cover guidelines for developing and implementing effective meetings. MENTOR NETWORK
Tools, Training and Networking for Mentors and Mentor Leaders Learn about the latest research and effective practices in new teacher
induction through a format that includes both collaborating and
networking with other districts. Specific topics are selected with the
input of network participants and may include, but are not limited to
the following:
➢ Mentoring Strategies
➢ Observation and Feedback Techniques
➢ Program Organization and Accountability
➢ Mentor Leadership
➢ District Support
➢ Program Evaluation
➢ Handling Difficult Conversations
