 | | David E. Nystuen, principal of Bonner Elementary School, Stewartville Public Schools | Dave Nystuen was nominated for the Southeast MESPA Division Leadership Achievement Award for his strong leadership skills and the outreach he provides to other principals. Dave has been in the principalship for thirteen years, with the past nine at Bonner Elementary.
According to David Craft (current Southeast Division president and principal of Greenvale Park Elementary, Northfield), “Dave Nystuen led his Southeast Division peers for two years, as president-elect and president. He assisted principals in gathering data from colleagues concerning administration of their buildings. He organized a study group of area principals that met quarterly to discuss issues of curriculum, staffing, NCLB, etc. He showed great intuition in arranging for former Rep. Steve Sviggum to speak to us about the impact of state happenings on our schools. Dave has been on his education district’s advisory board for the past nine years and has been willing to mentor younger principals.”
Nystuen believes in the words of Theodore Roosevelt: “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” He considers among the most significant accomplishments of his career that: he taught for seventeen years (at second, third, fifth, and sixth grade levels); he coaches basketball, football and softball at the junior and senior high levels; and he wrote and received a number of grants to enhance student learning in three elementary settings.
