Administrative Clock Hours, or Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
How to obtain pre-approved CEUs for principal professional development offerings

If you plan to have speakers or professional discussions at your MESPA division meetings, you may request pre-approval of Administrative CEUs!

Under MN Rule 3512.1200 all licensed administrators (directors, principals, superintendents) must accumulate 125 clock hours/continuing education credits (CEUs) prior to being granted a Minnesota licensure renewal.

“Clock hours” means hours of actual instruction or supervised group activities in a Minnesota administrative and supervisory continuing education program. All continuing education programs, and the clock hours which may be earned in each program, must be approved by the Minnesota Board of School Administrators (MBSA). If clock hours are to be earned, approval must be secured before participants are registered in a continuing education program.

Most initiators of continuing education programs apply to the MBSA for pre-approval of their program and issue attendees a certificate from MBSA for the number of hours of engagement in the activity.

Programs are approved for period of time up to two years – i.e., MBSA will issue a new CEU certificate for a second year if a program is repeated, if and when notified of change of dates. A program will be approved if it meets the requirements of the rules and if the MBSA determines that the program is adequate to fulfill the purposes of continuing education requirements.

To request that your division meeting be approved for CEUs, visit the MSBA Web site at www.msbsa.org, or fill out the request form below and send it to the MBSA.
