 | Anne Moyano, Western Division
 | | Anne Moyano, principal of S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School, Moorhead School District (ISD #152) | Anne Moyano was nominated for the Western MESPA Division Leadership Achievement Award by her peers. In making the nomination, Crystal Thorson, principal of Viking Elementary School in Pelican Rapids, MN, said, “Anne is a truly exemplary leader on many fronts; her staff, parents, and students know her as a woman of reflective integrity, and her peers value her example as a fellow principal. As Western division president in 2004-05, Anne brought increased rigor into the meetings, with quality programming and professional development for principals in western Minnesota.”
Moyano believes “selecting new teachers and staff and supporting their development is the most influential work I do. I have had the opportunity to select teachers for many positions and take great satisfaction in their positive effect on children’s learning and development.” Listing significant accomplishments during her career, she includes the work she has done collaboratively with her teachers to improve student achievement. “In recent years,’ she said, “the staff and I have established the structures, norms and vision of teacher teams working together to examine student achievement, set SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely), and create instructional strategies that will help students meet those goals. The change in school culture has been significant and we are beginning to see the results in improved achievement.”
Four years ago, Moyano became the principal of S.G. Reinertsen Elementary, a new school in Moorhead that blended students, staff, and families from three different elementary schools. The challenges were great. Today, under her leadership, there is a unified and energized parent organization, children have made new friends and feel they belong in their school, quality staff relationships exist, and routines and norms are in place. “None of these accomplishments are mine alone,” Moyano insists. “Through their inspiration and collaboration, the school staff, fellow principals, and district administrators have shared in their attainment.”
Moyano has been a member of MESPA since 1994-95. She has served her Western division colleagues as President-elect and President and as a representative to the Minnesota School of Excellence and Educational Advisory Committees. This year, Anne is a valued mentor in a Western Division principals’ study group, meeting monthly to discuss current literature on education reform.
