2011 Division Leadership Award, Peter Olson-Skog

The Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA) recognized Peter Olson-Skog, principal of Carver Elementary, North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District (ISD #622), with the 2011 MESPA Division Leadership Achievement Award. Principals are responsible for a school’s instructional, school culture, and resource leadership. The award honors principals whose exemplary leadership and sustained efforts have made noteworthy contributions to the operation of effective school learning programs --  improving education, their communities, and their profession. He will be recognized by colleagues statewide on February 10, 2011 at the MESPA Awards Banquet – held at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel during the annual MESPA Institute, the statewide convention of Minnesota’s elementary and middle level principals.

In his principalship, Olson-Skog follows the philosophy of “Every child, every day, every opportunity.” Author Unknown

Olson-Skog was nominated by Andrew Fields, principal at Lake Elmo Elementary in the Stillwater Public Schools, who stated: “In the 2009-2010 school year Peter Olson-Skog took a risk by allowing a local newspaper to document his school’s journey through Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP). Not only did Peter raise public awareness of the challenges public schools face, he also approached the topic as a challenge, an opportunity for growth. In the end, Carver’s story had a happy ending. Carver Elementary students made great improvement and the school made adequate yearly progress. Peter’s exemplary leadership and accomplishments represent his school and our profession extremely positively.”
